The primary focus for volunteers teaching in China is teaching conversational English to Chinese students. Global Crossroad presently works with Chinese public schools and most of them are located in rural parts that serve the kids of farmers and lower class people. Non-native English speakers are also invited to join this project Skills/Qualifications
No specific qualifications are needed to join the volunteer teaching project in China. However, volunteers should have a strong enough knowledge of English to efficiently teach it's basics to Chinese students. Non-native speakers can also join this project provided they can speak, read, and write English. No salary or benefits will be offered to volunteer English teachers in the China project.
Volunteers Responsibilities
There is growing demand for an English education in China, and with the economic growth, the importance of English education is also growing as well. Many of the schools in China have established an 'English corner.' This is a place specially designed for teaching and learning English. These schools are very eager to get native English teachers but unfortunately, only private, expensive schools in city areas attract native English teachers. Most of the schools in the rural areas with poor resources remain searching for quality teachers for their English classes.
Therefore, as a volunteer English teacher in China, you will be a tremendous help teaching English at these resource poor and rural schools. Regrettably, it is not currently possible to arrange free room and food because these schools do not offer extra salary like private schools.
Room/food/supervision
Global Crossroad arranges a separate room and Chinese food three meals a day for our volunteers. Most of the teaching placements are far from our office in Hangzhou, so our In-Country Coordinator will keep in constant touch with you by Email or phone. The Head Master of your placement school will be your main contact.
