Support Children with Special Needs in China
Overview of the Project
Working with disabled children in China requires volunteers to support and give plenty of attention to children who have mental or physically disabilities. Many Chinese parents are struggling simply to make ends meet and the extra financial burden of a disabled child introduces a new economic stress to the family and they are unable to afford the specialized education and care needed. Special needs of these children in this project include physical, mental, emotional and behavioral disabilities. Our local partners are community centers in Xi'an that care for these special needs children who are unable to attend regular schooling.
Role of Volunteer
As a volunteer in support children with special needs in China, you will work kids that need special care and help relieve the staffing pinch by helping with day-to-day operations of the centers, such as serving meals and cleaning. Volunteers offer the most support during downtimes by teaching

- Start dates: 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month
- Location: Xi’an
- Departure and End Point: Xi’an, China (Xi’an Xianyang International Airport)
- Accommodation and meals: Homebase and Chinese meals three times daily
- Activities: Support, nurture and educate disabled children in a community center project
- Working hours: 25-35 hours per week
life skills and playing games with the children or singing songs and doing craft projects. Teaching English and practicing conversation skills with older children is another important activity. Volunteers bring a fresh energy and renew the levels of love, hope and encouragement that are called for in these centers.
Skills/Qualification Needed
Our project requires no special skills or qualifications outside of patience, tolerance and flexibility. Our volunteers must be open minded and have the emotional strength required to work with special needs children as emotional and/or behavioral challenges can be overwhelming to the volunteer.

Global Crossroad’s volunteer in China program is based in Xi’an, an extraordinary city and one of China’s most popular tourist destinations. The city possesses a strong tourism infrastructure and many activities that require only a few hours to experience or explore. There are caves, temples, palaces, markets, Chinese dragon boat racing, Mongolian wrestling, festivals, architecture, temples, art, restaurants, beaches, hotels and many more options!
The famed Terra Cotta Army is located in Xi’an and people travel great distances to see these warriors and horses arranged to protect the Mausoleum of Liu Bang — the first emperor of the dynasty that followed the Qin.
Xi’an offers an incredible assortment of sightseeing from exploring the Bell Tower or numerous pagodas and temples. There are the City Walls, six Chinese National Parks and Mount Hua, one of the Five Sacred Taoist Mountains, are all in and around Xi’an. The city is also awash with culinary delights and colorful markets. There are incredible experiences to be had all over the city. In fact, many travelers set about exploring on foot, wandering the streets until they find something interesting to see or do.
