| Teaching
music in Brazil is an enriching and
delightful project for experienced
musicians and is based in the Center
for Music Education in Olinda. Skilled
musicians from across Brazil volunteer
to give their free time to teach music
to the interested students ranging
in age from 6 to 70. Global Crossroad
volunteers can be students, too, and
learn Brazilian music with the rest
of the class. Adequate classroom facilities
are available for instruction. Volunteers
will teach groups of 15-20 students,
both children and adults, either in
the morning or afternoon. Volunteers
may return home proficient in playing
the violin or piano, or having learned
how to play Brazilian drums or other
ethnic instruments. Bring English
language tapes or CDs—the Brazilian
music students will be thrilled.
Activities
Volunteer will participate in music
classes for 2 hours each day, either
as a student, as an assistant, or
both. Volunteers may also have the
opportunity to help students with
conversational English—as an
extracurricular activity—for
about 2 hours each day.
Working Hours
Volunteers will work either in the
mornings or in the afternoons on weekdays
between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., with
an occasional assignment on a Saturday
morning.
Resources
All resources are provided; however,
English language teaching materials
are scarce. Volunteers may consider
bringing books, magazines, and any
other teaching resources available.
Special Points
The Teaching Music project is ideal
for the musically gifted volunteer.
By participating in choral or music
groups, volunteers may have the opportunity
showcase their talent in vibrant ethnic
festivals, colorful carnivals, or
local entertainment shows. Travel
arrangements are made for volunteers
who are part of these activities.
