Overview of the Project

As computer skills are often a requirement of anyone seeking employment in Brazil . The majority of children – regardless of educational background or income – are eager and able to learn computer skills; soaking up information at a significantly more quantitative rate than Brazilian adults. Teaching computer skills to the young citizens of Rio is a progressive idea which is best done by those who have been around computers all their lives. Volunteers who are versed in a number of software programs are encouraged to participate in this program as the young (and occasionally adults) of Brazil attempt to catch up to the rapidly-evolving world of web-based communications.

In collaboration with numerous community-based organizations, Global Crossroad places volunteer in various “fevelaes” around Rio de Janeiro . Attributes of this particular project not only help to improve these children's computer skills, but also assists in honing and improving their conversational/communicative English skills – a high-demand and marketable skill sought after in many of Brazil more fast-moving cities.

Role of the Volunteer

Volunteers are involved in various activities such as:

  • Teaching computer/software skills (Microsoft Office Suite, JAVA, C++ )
  • Teaching web design
  • Teaching installation of computer hardware
