Overview of the Project

With widespread poverty and such as small division of wealth, the majority of Brazilian parents are caught in an all-too-familiar conundrum: stay home and forsake their jobs to care for their children OR leave their children at home? In partnership with local NGOs, Global Crossroad works to provide education and daycare services for the children of poor parents. This project is in need of volunteers who are willing to share their time, efforts, skill, and love for the good of these street children.

In Global Crossroad's Street Children Project, volunteer will help these underprivileged children by teaching either Basic English or Portuguese. Currently, there are approximately 45 children ranging in ages from 2-4 years old. Volunteers will help by feeding, caring for, and simply playing with these very young children. Volunteers may also help in developing creative programs for art, music, dance, and sports. Additional assistance with day trips, sanitation, personal hygiene, cooking, and administrative duties might be requested.

Role of the Volunteer

Volunteers are involved in various activities such as:

  • Helping children with homework and teaching basic conversational English
  • Supporting recreational and artistic activities with the objective of educational learning
  • Reading stories, caring for and simply playing with the children
  • Organizing and developing sports activities
  • Supporting in the kitchen/helping to serve meals
  • Participating/assisting in location-specific duties – routine maintenance, construction, etc.

Skills/Qualifications/Requirements

There are no specific qualifications required since Global Crossroad's local coordinator and project staff members provide any necessary orientation and training to adequately perform volunteer activities. However, beginner to intermediate knowledge of Portuguese is preferred as well as individuals who are enthusiastic about caring for others and compassionate to the often unfortunate situations of these children.

NOTE: Global Crossroad's local partners offer Portuguese (15 hours a week) classes in conjunction with volunteer projects. Portuguese classes are mandatory and ensure the success and maximum level of involvement for volunteers.
