CONSERVACAO E PRESERVACAO DE MONUMENTOS DO SITIO HISTORICO

Our Historic Preservation Project in Brazil is a wonderful opportunity to participate in the restoration and preservation of many 16th century churches and stately monuments in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Recife. With a rich colonial history of Dutch, Portuguese, French, and Spanish influence, Recife was once regarded as one of the most important cities in Brazil. The wealth and growth of Recife was secured through the sugar plantations and, unfortunately, through the establishment of the slave culture. The buildings and plantations developed during this time are reminders of history and an important part of the preservation program.

Activities
Volunteer will participate in workshops with youths from the local favelas by teaching or learning how to restore and preserve historic buildings, monuments, and artifacts. The workshops are conducted at a school specifically established by Recife City Hall for this purpose. The workshops cover tech-drawing, sketching, painting, woodwork, sculpture in masonry, gypsum and wood, and the restoration of pavements, floors, gates, facades, roofs, doors and windows. While helping to restore and maintain colonial buildings, churches and monuments on-site, volunteers may also be asked to translate the labels and documentation of these historic structures. If possible, volunteers may be involved in teaching English to some of the project workers.

Working Hours
Volunteer will work from Monday to Sunday, 5 hours a day, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Resources
Basic resources will be provided but if you are possession of any relevant tools, gloves, hardhats or books, be sure to bring them along.
