| Volunteers
will be rewarded as they help in various
self-contained community health centers,
all dedicated to the delivery of general
health care and disease prevention.
Each center is situated in an extremely
poor area known as a “favela.”
The centers are run on a day-to-day
basis by a team of health care professionals,
usually consisting of 1 or 2 doctors
and, at the most, a few nurses, and
an auxiliary staff consisting of a
cook, janitor, and administrative
support. Medical students and health
care professionals have an opportunity
to have a direct contribution in their
area of expertise. Help is needed
in general medicine, pharmacy, nursing,
nutrition, and social work and Maternity
Hospital. But if you have a desire
to work in the community healthcare
sector, but have no experience, this
is also a wonderful opportunity to
work on a worthwhile project.
Activities
Medical students will participate
in health awareness campaigns and
prevention, and generally assist nursing
and other staff. Medical professionals
will attend to families and children,
and give general help, volunteers
without experience but who have an
interest or desire to work in the
Health Sector can also fully participate
in this program.
Working Hours
You will work 5 hours per day, between
the hours of 7.00am and 5.00pm, from
Monday to Friday.
Resources
All that you need to make a successful
contribution to this project will
be provided. Resources are scarce
but well utilised. Commitment and
enthusiasm are important resources.
Special Points
Volunteer will need some Portuguese
to take part in the Maternity Hospital
Project, but no Portuguese is required
for the General Health Care Project
(Community Health Program).
