Crossroad’s Community Sports
Program was designed to encourage
sporting activities within the local
community, from football and aerobics
to arts and crafts classes such as
painting and drawing. Project volunteers
will help to involve the community
in cultural dance activities including
hip-hop and ciranda. Most of the activities
take place within the community; inter-community
football matches and skateboarding
competitions are actively encouraged.
The project receives some federal
funding and, while the project has
some full-time staff, it relies heavily
on volunteer support.
Activities
Volunteers will help plan and carry
out sports, games, and recreational
activities within the community, as
well as encourage and motivate those
in the community to participate. Volunteers
may act as a referee or help coach
the participants in their chosen activity.
They may also help organize tournaments
and competitions and help to organize
training schedules.
Working Hours
Volunteers will work 5 hours a day
on week days some time between 7 a.m.
and 6 p.m.
Resources
Facilities are few. Any resources,
such as sports and activity equipment,
that volunteers could bring from home
to support the center’s activities
would be appreciated.
Special Points
Communities involved in this project
are extremely poor; unemployment in
these areas is high.
Global Crossroad
has many on-going volunteer programs
