This project at Parque Zoologico de Santa Cruz is for people interested in Bolivian animal species diversity. Privately founded in 1974, it was opened to the public five years later and is now one of the best zoos in South America, and is dedicated to species preservation and educating its visitors. It is a municipal non-government project that plays an important educational and recreational role: it works on protection and conservation of wild fauna and conducts studies and investigations about fauna resources to increase the life span of wild animals. The zoo mainly represents Bolivian fauna (reptiles, birds and mammals), as well as some animals in South America.
Volunteer in Bolivia working in Santa Cruz zoo will clean cages, check information signs and correct them, cook food for animals, feed the animals, provide veterinary assistance and nutrition advice. Volunteer will take care of animals and help with veterinary work and maintenance of zoo grounds. Volunteer can also be involved in the preparation of educational materials and workshops. Volunteer will work for 4-6 hours a day. Since Saturday and Sunday are working days, volunteer can choose the days off during the week. All the necessary textbooks and magazines will be provided by the project. Veterinary implements and cleaning instruments are also available. Experience of veterinary work and maintenance of animals are plus points but not a restriction.
Volunteer must learn some Spanish before arriving in Bolivia and this is quite essential for a successful placement.
