Work in School for Blinds
Program: Volunteer in Bolivia
Project: School for Blinds
Project Location: Santa Cruz
Departure/Arrival Point: Viru-Viru International Airport, Santa Cruz
Starting Date: 1st and 3rd Monday of each month
Special Requirements: None

Under volunteer program in Bolivia, volunteer can choose this special school that gives support to more than 120 children and adults with blindness problems since birth. The school provides orientation to parents and professionals from different areas on how to integrate blind people in the community. The school also has a clinic for blind but resources are limited. Occupational therapies such as gardening and textile making (by hand) are also given by the school. This is an ideal project for the volunteer who are agronomist or have gardening skills. The project remains closed during July, December and January. The clinic with 35 staff is open throughout the year. The resources for the clinic come from donations and people also pay nominal fees for the services.

Volunteers who are oculist will get to interact with the professionals from the same background and also come in contact with people who need medical services, but oculist is not a requirement to volunteer in this project.

Professional volunteers will support others from the same background with any up-dated method of diagnostics and treatments. As an additional activity, volunteer can teach English. Volunteers who are not professional can be class assistants but all the volunteers, regardless of their background will be working under the supervision of professionals in every area. Volunteers are required to work for 5 hours a day and also participate in special activities like workshops. The project has magazines, textbooks, and all the equipments for diagnostics and treatments.

Volunteers must learn as much Spanish as possible before arriving in Bolivia.
