Overview of the project

Bernardino is a small rural public school that has only kindergarten and elementary grades.   The school is located in Pajas Blancas, a small community located 25 km (roughly a 40 minute bus ride) northwest of Córdoba city and close to the small Sierras. The town cannot afford a high school so this is the children's only certain opportunity for education.   The 130 children of Bernardino range in age from 5 to 12 years and come from the rural communities and poor areas of Cordoba 's outskirts. Since they have only three available classrooms they are divided in two shifts: morning (for higher grades) and afternoon (for lower grades). The school serves a daily lunch for all of the students at the same time between these shifts.  Volunteer teaching program in Argentina aims to support these poor children. Volunteers work side by side with teachers and other volunteers providing care for the children, teaching them basic English and academic skills, organizing and developing sport activities, and simply playing with them.

Role of the Volunteer

Volunteers in any of the above projects are involved in various activities such as:

  • Teaching English and other subjects
  • Helping children with homework and teaching basic conversational English
  • Supporting recreational, manual and artistic activities that favor child expression
  • Reading stories, performing puppet shows, caring for and simply playing with the children
  • Organizing and developing sports activities
  • Supporting in the kitchen/helping to serve lunch in the dining room
  • Participating in special projects like construction, organizing a library, and building maintenance

Skills/Qualifications Requirements

Beginner to intermediate knowledge of Spanish is preferred. There are no additional specific qualifications required since the project staff will provide any necessary orientation and training to adequately perform the volunteer activities.

Room/Supervision

Global Crossroad provides accommodation (two beds per room) in a well kept house in a very quiet and safe middle class residential neighborhood which is less than 10 minutes walk to downtown This situation allows participants to make friends fast and to immerse more easily in the local culture. The daily free Spanish classes and the Tango classes are provided in this place, which also serves as our local partner's organization's office so you will have permanent access to our in country coordinators.

Location Descriptions

All volunteer projects in Argentina are located in poor communities surrounding the city. Córdoba is a safe and modern city second in size and stature only to Buenos Aires , although with a much lower cost of living.  Typical of a University City it has a vibrant youth culture.  Located at the base of the breath-taking Sierras, Cordoba is one of the major tourist destinations for Argentines; however, there are few international tourists, creating a wonderfully immersive environment for travelers truly wanting to learn the language and rich culture of Argentina .

In the colonial period, prior to the rise of Buenos Aires , Cordoba was the center of arts and learning, a place of scholars and priests, churches and universities. Some 300 years later, Cordoba has retained its rich colonial heritage, especially in its culture and architecture, and was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 2000. During weekends and free time, there are virtually unlimited travel options such as visiting impressive colonial churches, taking in the fantastic scenic views nearby, trekking, horseback riding, trips to local handicraft outlets, and many more activities to enjoy
