Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

As a medical volunteer in Argentina, you will have the incredible chance to shadow and observe experienced medical professionals as they see patients, make diagnosis, and treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. You will get a fascinating look behind the curtain of what it’s really like to work in the healthcare field.

*Medical volunteers will shadow local doctors and learn mostly from observation. Due to the inherent risk involved and medical regulations, volunteers cannot treat patients or become involved in surgery during this project.


Skills and Qualifications

We welcome passionate volunteers from around the world who are pursuing a career in the medical field. You will need to present a valid medical student id or have verifiable credentials from a certified medical institution. We are open to medical students and professionals from a variety of disciplines, including future doctors, nurses, EMT’s, etc.

Beginner to intermediate Spanish is preferred for our Argentina medical volunteer program. If you’d like to work on your language skills first, Global Crossroad offers Spanish language programs in both Buenos Aires and Cordoba.


Every single day at this project will have you fully immersed in the fascinating medical world. You’ll be learning so much to help you in your future career and experiencing an exciting new culture at the same time.

Your actual schedule will vary based on your final placement, but here’s a sample schedule so you know what to expect:

  • First Day: On your first day volunteering in medical program in Argentina, our in-country coordinator will take you to your project placement and help you get started. You’ll meet the doctors and nurses you’ll be observing, and then undergo an orientation.
    At the orientation, you’ll learn all about your project, what you can expect, your schedule, safety protocol, and you’ll go over the customs and culture of Argentina.
  • Weekdays: A typical volunteer day might look something like this:
  • 7.00 to 7.30 AM​: Breakfast in Argentina is a simple affair with toast or a crescent shaped pastry, called medialuna, and coffee or juice. Start your day around the table with your host family, or whip something up in your shared hostel kitchen.
  • 7.45 AM:  Head out for an exciting day of being a medical volunteer in Argentina! You’ll observe an experienced doctor and get a feel for life as a medical professional.
  • 12.00 PM: Pack a lunch to bring with you or try a fun restaurant with your fellow volunteers or the local project staff. Use this chance to make friends from around the world!
  • 3.00 PM: With your medical observations done for the day, you’ll be free to explore the beautiful city of Cordoba and all it has to offer.
  • 6.45 PM: Experience traditional Argentinian cuisine for dinner. Gather around the table with your host family or dine out with your fellow volunteers!

All volunteer programs in Argentina start every Monday of each month. However, if there is travel constrains, you can start any project on any day.

Global Crossroad's volunteer abroad in Argentina application and registration fee cost US $299. The application fee covers the cost of advertising, program promotion, and office expenses (rent, utilities, and staff salaries in USA office).

In addition to the application fee, you are required to pay a weekly program fee. You will pay your weekly fee directly to the country coordinator, who in turn will allocate it to your host family, project and other in-country support we offer to our volunteers. This way, the fees that you pay will benefit those who rightfully deserve them, and not for company profit.

The volunteering in Argentina program fees will cover expenses that will begin on the first day of the program (usually the first or third Monday of the month) to the last day of the program. If you arrive before the first day of the program or you decide you stay beyond your program’s last day, you will be responsible for the additional expenses, which would typically be around $30 a day for room and meals at a hostel.


Accommodation and Meal

When you join our medical volunteering program in Argentina, you’ll have the choice of staying with a welcoming host family in a culturally immersive experience you won’t soon forget, or bonding with fellow volunteers at our volunteer hostel.

Host families will share a traditional breakfast and dinner with you. Volunteers staying at our hostel will provide their own meals and will have access to a shared kitchen and numerous nearby restaurant options.

Medical Volunteer Argentina: FAQs

Arrival and departure

For our Argentina medical volunteer program, you will fly into Pajas Blancas International Airport. It’s best to come to Argentina one day before the start date of your project to rest and prepare for your exciting adventure.

We’ll have a Global Crossroad representative waiting for you as soon as you land, and they’ll take you safely to your accommodations. If you miss your flight or are delayed, just let our in-country coordinator and we’ll make the adjustment to your pickup time.

When you finish up as a medical volunteer in Argentina, you’ll need to book your taxi to the airport as this isn’t included in your program fee. Just have a chat with the local project staff if you need help with this, and they’ll be happy to advise you.

Visa

You will need a tourist visa to participate in our programs but follow these simple steps and you’ll have yours in no time.

Vaccination

You’re doing your research and planning ahead, but don’t forget the extremely important step of getting vaccinated before you travel abroad. This goes double for volunteers working in healthcare! Make an appointment with a knowledgeable doctor to discuss your trip and get up to date.

To volunteer in medical program in Argentina, you’ll need vaccinations for chickenpox, influenza, typhoid, rabies, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis), meningitis, pneumonia, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, yellow fever, polio, measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), and shingles.

Is there anything potential volunteers need to know about the Argentina medical volunteer project?

The ability to communicate in Spanish is very important for this project. It is wise to enroll in Global Crossroad’s Spanish language program in Cordoba or Buenos Aires if you need some work on your skills.

You must complete your application at least six weeks prior to your start day. It is also required that you submit a criminal record, as this is a security protocol to ensure the safety of the people you are working with.

You need to be ready to make at least a 4-week commitment to this program and bring along your own scrubs to wear.
