Free Tango Classes

The tango is one of the distinguishing features of Argentine culture and to visit Argentina without experiencing this music and dance would be a disappointment. Thus, volunteers who come to Córdoba will have the opportunity to participate in free tango classes taught by a world-class tango dancer. Additionally, there will be opportunities to visit restaurants and clubs to watch professional tango performances or practice your moves on the dance floor.

The Dance

Tango was born in Buenos Aires , Argentina and represents the spirit of Argentina , though the dance is known internationally. The dance is sensual and complex, the music emotive and the lyrics sad, passionate and violent. Each dance tells the story of a man and a woman and speaks of love and sadness. The choreography of tango is distinguished by the close hold and simple physical expressions of the feet, the arms, the face and the rest of the body.

The History

Tango is an urban fusion of European, African and Latin American elements, reflecting the massive immigration to Argentina that began in the late nineteenth century. These immigrants, together with native Argentines of Spanish and indigenous descent, were part of an intense process of multicultural and multiethnic mixing in Argentina . Through this process, tango was born and has since spread to all parts of the world, though it remains distinctively Argentine and expresses the spirit of the argentino .

The Classes

The tango class meets twice a week, for around two hours each time, in the house where the volunteers live. You will first learn the history and emotion of the dance, beginning with simple steps and learning how to walk like a tango dancer. Every week, fancier moves and flourishes will be added to the basic 8-count so that at the end of the class, you will be able to dance an entire tango, with foot flicks, sweeping arms and legs, fast turns and even a lift or two.
